It is among the trickiest of decisions for any hostess. But when Sarah Brown was deciding who to put next to Michelle Obama at tonight’s dinner for summit spouses in 10 Downing Street, she had years of experience in public relations to draw on.

Seated on one side of Mrs Obama will be J. K. Rowling, the author; on the other will be Kelly Holmes, the double Olympic gold medallist.

Naomi Campbell, the model, will also be among the prominent group of women from sport, fashion, business and the arts in attendance.

The menu, prepared by the chef Jamie Oliver, will feature seasonal produce including Welsh lamb, Jersey Royal new potatoes and asparagus from Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.

The wine list is expected to include the award-winning Nyetimber sparkling wine produced in West Sussex.

Mrs Brown is in charge of the spouses’ programme and has given much thought to tonight’s table plan.

Rowling, the Harry Potter author who wrote the first of her best-selling books when she was living on benefits as a single mother in a mice-infested Edinburgh flat, has long been a vocal Labour supporter. Last year she gave £1 million to the party.

Holmes, 38, who was one of London’s ambassadors for the city’s Olympic bid, served in the Army before winning the 800m and 1500m gold medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Campbell, 38, has admitted to having “anger management problems” and has twice undertaken community service sentences for assault convictions, most recently at a homeless shelter in the East End of London.
