Sustainable Wine: What the Buzz is All About

Sustainable Wine: What the Buzz is All About

Carrie Strong | Chef's Blade

In light of their efforts, the Moores are not discouraged by the lack of government labeling. Tim states, “We do not believe in certification of the fact that we try to live a sustainable lifestyle in our business and our family.” Tim explains that greater than any classification, “It’s just the right thing to do.”

The lack of certified labeling poses an obstacle for consumers looking for an easy way to find sustainable wine. Fortunately for concerned wine consumers, there are websites dedicated to help navigate eco-friendly wine consumption. State-run organizations such as Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine (OCSW) and California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) list participating wineries and vineyards on their websites. The wineries listed must adhere to the philosophies and practices of each respected organization. These organizations have high standards similar to VineBalance that ensure honest viticulture efforts and boost consumer confidence. The OCSW maintains its goal is “from vine to bottle, from grower to consumer. It’s our goal to educate and empower everyone along the way.” They even go so far as to create assurance by boldly printing on their home page, “Sustainable is not a buzz word.”

Tim Moore would agree as he simply and thoughtfully explains, “Sustainability is all things to all people, it seeks to incorporate all disciplines from traditional farming to biodynamic but in the end it is also economics and making decisions that are the best for your business.” With so much care and consideration for both environmental protection and viticulture, sustainability is taking a step in the right direction.
