8. Ford is Profitable


For the first time since the third quarter of 2005, Ford turned a profit in North America, over $300 million. Worldwide, it saw profits of almost $1 billion. On the brink of bankruptcy, Ford was able to turn itself around by cutting costs, increasing efficiency, and expanding its market share.

Those savings, Ford believes, are far more successful and sustainable than slashing prices to lure in customers. In fact, the company believes that profitability will last into 2011. While GM and Chrysler still have farther to go in righting their ships, the moribund American auto industry as a whole seems poised for a turnaround, even as Toyota flounders.
